About Sims & Blue

The History of Sims & Blue

Established in 1962, John Sims and Gilbert Blue started their partnership. The two friends were both out on the brush, John comes from a carpentry background, where he served his time with his father John Sims Senior. Gilbert came from Duncan Brothers Painters as an apprentice. Over time John moved more into the office side of things, especially quoting new work.

Training apprentices has always been a large part of the success of Sims & Blue Limited. From the early years, that was the passion, and essentially how the company grew. A lot of their early work involved a number of schools right around the region, plus the railway buildings around Central Otago.

Sims & Blue Limited is now a successful Dunedin company having trained well over 70 apprentices. Many of whom are now running their own very successful established businesses with their own quality reputations.

The firm has stood the test of time, keeping properties all over the Otago and District regions looking sharp for many years. Sims & Blue Limited are proud to be lifelong members of the New Zealand Master Painters Association with John Sims serving as president in 1993.

The company now moves towards its next evolution with Glenn Sims and Nathan Sims. But the key foundations remain the same - quality workmanship; where preparation is the key, communication with the client, and doing the job right the first time.

Over John's lifetime in the industry, he believes in doing things the right way, and has taught his many apprentices just that. John is proud of his achievements and rightly so. Still strongly involved in the firms day-to-day activities, John was recently recognised by the New Zealand Master Painters Association for training apprentices in the industry for over 50 years.

In his spare time, John manages his beloved indoor cricket club 'Sims & Blue Indoor Cricket', and is also heavily involved with the Albion Cricket Club. John also loves spending time with his family and being in the garden.

An eye for detail has also been passed on to John's son, Glenn, who is now handling the running of the firm. Glenn, the next generation of the Sims family, who grew up in the painting business, brings over 30 years of experience to his role as managing director of Sims & Blue Limited.

Glenn has built a wealth of knowledge in the industry and can see what is needed in the painting business from both the clients and firms perspective. He has also built some solid friendships in the industry which are invaluable.

Glenn has a passion for restoring old wooden villas to their former glory, something that takes vision, patience, time, and working closely alongside the owners of the property.

In his spare time Glenn can often be found in the hills of Otago riding his mountain bike or supporting his children in their many sporting events.

Nathan Sims, Office & Coordination Manager

Nathan Sims, Office & Coordination Manager

John’s youngest son Nathan has recently re-joined the company after a break of a few years whilst travelling and furthering his knowledge. During this time Nathan spent 5 years as an accounts analyst with the Aotea Group of Companies, mainly Aotea Security NZ Ltd. Though this time Nathan built a wealth of knowledge around accounting, process management, and getting the best out of a team.

Nathan is fully immersed in the day to day running of Sims & Blue Limited, and mining all the valuable information from his father. Nathan’s is all about  streamlining processes, and making things seamless and stress-free for their clients, building a team, and bringing the business into the 21st century.

In his spare time Nathan loves exploring with his wife Kaylee and three young boys. He is also an active playing member of the Sims & Blue Indoor Cricket Club and is heavily involved in the Albion Cricket Club as Club Captain.
